Home to Roost
by Jackie Henderson
Each year between the months of November to February an amazing phenomena occurs in the skies above the Somerset levels. Murmurations of starlings. Thousands of starlings create an exhilarating aerial display of synchronised swooping and swishing. They seem to form a singular mass that pulsates and throbs as though sharing the same heartbeat.
When I first encountered this spectacle I was amazed not only at the sight of wave after wave of birds settling into the reeds but of the the noise of thousands of beating wings.
